The Art of Travel Hacking

With a little research, I figured out how to cover the cost of flights with miles and points.
I also learned how to stay for free by house-sitting and couch-surfing. I learned how to travel for long-term by packing wisely.
There's so many tips to share! The posts in this ongoing series will get you started.

Road Tripping "The Ring Road" in Iceland

I teamed up with 2 other travelers. We drove The Ring Road for six days.
Iceland is full of rock formations, geysers, waterfalls, and moss-covered everything.
Surprisingly, there are also tons of swimming pools, farmland, and an enormous backpacker community.

Tracing My German Roots

Travel is the perfect time to connect with yourself and all that makes you, you!
So I got in touch with some relatives I had never met before and ended up staying with them across the country.
I learned about German and Bavarian culture and discovered my family history along the way.

Thailand from North to South

I found the perfect travel groove in Thailand. I went where I wanted, when I wanted.
I stayed for extended times in different places allowing the area and its people to open up to me.
I got my open water diver certification on the island of Ko Tao and ate bugs with locals in the Northern Mountains.

New Zealand - The South Island

A ferry boat ride across the Cook Strait and a hitch-hiking adventure led me to Christchurch.
I road-tripped for a month in Frogger, my green hatchback rental and saw unbelievable landscapes.
The South Island was home to the majority of LOTR film locations for obvious reasons.

New Zealand - The North Island

For 6 weeks, I chilled in the nation's capital and drove all over the North Island, tramping and camping everywhere.
Then I returned for a camping trip with a local around Northland and I dove the Bay of Islands.
Eventually, I decided to settle down in Hawke's Bay for a while to volunteer and explore a new relationship.

Diving + Deviating Down Under

After a koala encounter on Phillip Island, I drove over 4000km from Melbourne to Cairns.
I saw tons of beaches, waterfalls, and rainforests along the way.
Then I ticked off a life-long bucket list item: A 3-day dive trip at the Great Barrier Reef.

Niue Island, the Rock of Polynesia

On a whim, my new partner Jono, a New Zealander, and I traveled to Niue to discover its natural wonders for a week.
We dove in waters with 100 meters of visibility and saw whales and dolphins jumping within 50 meters off the coast.
Incredibly friendly locals gave us rides and invited us into their lives resulting in Niue being my favorite destination of all.

Singapore in a Day

I was on my way from Auckland, New Zealand to Bali, Indonesia when I had a layover in Singapore.
I fell in love with the entire Marina Bay area including the Gardens by the Bay.
The gorgeous architecture, the floral artistry, and the crisp, clean streets make me want to go back one day soon!

The Bali Trifecta - Indonesia

I visited 3 places in Bali which resulted in selfies with monkeys, water temples, infinity pools, and glorious sunsets.
I checked out the islands east of Bali where I went diving. I enjoyed bicycling and discovering all the chill resorts everywhere.
I did yoga and took selfies with monkeys in Ubud. I ended my trip in Candidasa with a stellar motorbike tour guided by a local.

My return flight to the USA stopped over in San Francisco, California.
I visited with my (very pregnant) best friend and her husband for a catch-up.
We climbed to California's Mission Peak before I left home for New York.

Check out my other domestic deviations in the USA.
